The small animal GreenFeed is a turn-key system designed to measure emissions from individual small animals, such as sheep. The measures gas fluxes of Methane (CH4), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and optionally, Oxygen (O2), and Hydrogen (H2) from individual animals. It is also possible to aggregate emissions data from individual animals and determine herd averages. The system is typically configured to offer a small amount of pelleted bait attractant to entice the animals to visit multiple times per day. The gas emissions data is logged and then automatically processed allowing the user to easily access a summarized report of calculated fluxes.
The small animal system is typically used for small ruminant animals, sheep and goats for example. The system could be used to measure metabolic gases from other large animal species. It will measure CO2 flux accurately to a level of greater than 1,000 g/d and CH4 flux greater than about 60 g/d.
This unit requires a pelletized feed (< 7 mm in diameter) to be used. Any type of pelletized feed can be used, with some applications using pelletized grass and alfalfa, and others using a concentrate mix. Typically the amount of bait attractant used is about 1-1.5 kg per animal per day, however in some installations as little as 200 grams per animal per day. In other applications animals are given as much as 8 kg per animal per day. The amount of feed used is uniquely configurable for each animal.
In normal operating conditions, about 20 animals per day can be measured per GreenFeed, however this varies depending on the animals, the size of the pen or pasture, the quantity of feed, and the objectives.
✓ Gas RegulatorsEach unit includes its own set of gas regulators to reduce the pressure on high-pressure gas tanks. For manual calibration (without auto-calibration), two additional regulators are required to connect to the standard gas calibration tanks. Please specify in your order if you wish to purchase these optional regulators. ✓ Tool KitEach GreenFeed unit comes with a complete set of US-standard tools for maintenance and servicing. | ✓ Mass ScaleThe mass scale is used for CO₂ recovery testing and is capable of weighing up to 5 kg with 0.1 g precision. ✓ Auto-CalibrationThe auto-calibration system allows remote and automatic calibration of methane and carbon dioxide sensors. It requires two compressed gas tanks – a zero gas tank and a span gas tank – connected via special regulators. A sample line from each tank is routed to the gas sensor boxes, alternating automatically between zero and span gases. Calibration is typically performed once per day. |
Built-In connectivity
GreenFeed has two standard methods of connectivity to the Internet:
1) Wi-Fi
2) Cellular
Wi-Fi
If Wi-Fi is selected, a Wi-Fi adapter is installed that connects to an external Wi-Fi networks. Our technical staff will work with you to ensure the correct connection is used.
The advantage of a Wi-Fi connection is that it is wireless and usually data transmission is free. The disadvantage is that a Wi-Fi network with the correct permissions must be available in every location that uses the instrument.
Cellular Modem
If a cellular modem is used, a special modem is installed into the instrument that allows data to be sent over a cellular network. The user is responsible to supply a “SIM” card from their local cellular provider. The modem is then configured to operate with the local cellular network. The user will be responsible to pay a monthly data fee to the cellular carrier – usually the cost is 30 – 50 USD per month.
The advantage of the cellular modem is that it is portable, the system can be used at any location with a cellular signal. The disadvantage is the user will be responsible for the monthly data charges to their local provider, and the connection is typically not as fast as other connection types.
*At extra cost, the system can be configured to work with both connection types. Please specify if you need the flexibility to choose between options.
Online User Friendly Interface: We have developed an easy to user interface that an be accessed at all times, were you can view and control your systems in real-time. You do not have to be on-site to see the results. View emission patterns from individual animals as they are happening. This technology is light-years ahead of all other emission monitoring methodologies. It's like having an entire experimental laboratory inside your barn. The GreenFeed Emissions Monitoring system can be configured to dispense a specific diet to each individual animal. The rations are synchronized across multiple systems so your animals will get the correct amount of feed, no matter where they are.
Easily monitor and control your GreenFeed system from anywhere in the world:
Quickly determine how often each animal is visiting a system. You can easily distinguish which of your cattle are using GreenFeed and how often. You can even be alerted if an animal has not visited.
Data Insight and Support Contract
All units are sold with annual service and maintenance contract. Multiple year contracts are available.
