This study validates the use of the GreenFeed (GF) system as a reliable, on-farm alternative to respiration chambers (RC) for estimating feed efficiency (FE) in lactating dairy cows. Traditionally, FE is determined through direct measurement of individual dry matter intake (DMI), a method that is costly, labor-intensive, and impractical in large commercial herds. By comparing gas exchange data (CO₂ and O₂) collected via GF and RC systems with measured feed intake, the study demonstrates that gas-based metrics—especially residual CO₂ production (RCO₂), residual O₂ consumption (RO₂), and residual heat production (RHP)—correlate strongly with traditional FE indicators and can effectively rank cows by efficiency.
